Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect physically? Most experiences involve 1.5-2+ miles of walking on uneven terrain with some scrambling and bending to examine plants, fungi, and whatever else we might find. Specific requirements vary by experience and are detailed in each description. We go at a relaxed pace with opportunities to rest.

What should I bring? Sturdy shoes or boots with good traction, weather-appropriate clothing, and water are essential. Consider sun protection and insect repellent depending on season and location. Optional items include snacks (for longer experiences), journal, camera, and a mat or plastic bag for sitting on wet surfaces. For foraging, bring a container in which to stow your finds.

What about weather? We go rain or shine! Dress appropriately for conditions. For severe weather (high winds, lightning) or safety concerns (like red tide closures for coastal forages), we may cancel with full or partial refunds.

Do you find what you're looking for? Nature follows her own schedule. While we seek specific plants, animals, and fungi within their season, what we actually find depends on weather, environmental and human factors, and timing. We always learn from whatever we encounter—sometimes the "misses" teach us the most.

Are these experiences safe? Safety is our priority. We cover proper identification techniques, discuss toxic look-alikes, and follow all relevant regulations. Everything we do during our excursions is invitational; you'll never be encouraged to eat anything you're not completely confident about.

What about bathrooms / running water / cell phone service? We usually note in the excursion description whether bathrooms will be available. Unless otherwise noted, running water is probably not available. Expect cell phone service to be spotty at best. Set expectations with your community ahead of time and plan to keep your phone off or on airplane mode to save its battery.

Can I bring my dog? Unless your dog is a service animal, probably not. We will likely be hauling some amount of gear, searching for plants and animals, and hopefully collecting things, all over uneven ground and in a group - activities that dogs can complicate. Some locations prohibit dogs to protect restoration efforts and fragile habitat. Please leave your dog(s) at home.

Are kids welcome? Unless noted otherwise, mobile, curious kids who can focus for periods of time are welcome to participate! Please register them. Children 0-2 in carriers are fine and don't need tickets. Parents supervising children may find their own participation limited.

How big are the groups? We keep groups small—most experiences are capped at 8-10 people. This ensures our time together stays intimate, engaging, and truly experiential for everyone.

What accommodations are available? We welcome discussing how to make experiences accessible for your circumstances. Please contact us at natureengagingnature@gmail.com to explore options.
