Huckleberry Forage! Sunday, August 10
10a-1p August 9
Taste Summer's Wild Bounty! Join us in the forest as we seek out huckleberries. You'll learn to identify and safely harvest at least two berry-producing plants while practicing the principles of honorable harvest—taking only what's given and leaving plenty for wildlife and future foragers.
We'll taste our way through the landscape (when the berries cooperate!), discussing each plant's ecological relationships, growing patterns, and unique flavors. As we gather, we'll explore preservation options from simple drying and baking additions to jams and fruit leather, plus I'll share a versatile berry sauce recipe that works as both meat glaze and dessert topping.
What to expect: A 3-hour experience combining gentle hiking, plant identification, mindful harvesting, and plenty of tasting—if the berries are ripe and the wildlife hasn't beaten us to them! Bring sturdy shoes, sun protection, water, and a container for your berry haul. Mosquito protection recommended.
Exact location provided shortly before the event after scouting ensures we find the ripest, most abundant spots.
